Sundial computation

We can compute the full plan of a sundial horizontal or vertical, with the time equation, for anything location on the Earth.

We have to know the geographic location of the place (latitude and longitude). For a vertical sundial, we have to know the azimutal déviation by respect to the south. The best orientation is for a null deviation (full south orientation).

The delivered plan allow the building of the sundial. This one allow us to know the local time, and the month of the year is given by the length of the shadow. For the purist, the time equation is also delivered.

The example shown on the left is for a slightly inclined wall of 1° to the vertical, and with a 19.5° deviation to the east. Sizes are in cm and times is in Universal Time (TU). The variations on decades are negligible.

Sundial craft achievements

The photos on the left show two examples of realizations made from this type of plan. Summer hours are in the bottom,corresponding to the June solstice . Winter hours are on the top for the December solstice(~ Noël).

On the top photo, we can see from the length of the shadow that we are in June, almost on the 31st of the month, and it's 5 o'clock sharp in the afternoon, summer time.
